Individual Drama and Movement Therapy Sessions take place with the client and myself, on a one-to-one basis, where a base of trust, security and support is initially built before beginning to focus creatively on aspects of themselves and their lives that arise during our work together.
Like group therapy sessions, materials and mediums such as stories, images, fabrics, costumes, music, art materials, nature and toy objects are used to work creatively with the feelings and aspects as they arise.
Sessions are usually 1 hour in duration, once per week, depending on the client’s personal needs. Individual Sessions and initial meetings before commencing therapy usually take place in my private therapy space located in Downend, Bristol. Individual therapy sessions can either be ongoing, and a end-date for therapy can be discussed and set as the therapeutic journey develops, or they can have a certain number of sessions set, with an end date in mind, to be reviewed if necessary.
Dramatherapy is a form of arts psychotherapy which focuses on the practise of using exercises derived from Drama and Theatre, which are rationalised by various different psychological theories. It’s used to support, heal, comfort and provide therapy to an individual person or group of people. In a dramatherapy session, we may draw on mediums such as drama exercises, stories, myths, images, play, mask work, puppetry and voice to help our clients unconsciously explore and examine relationships, perceptions and experiences that are pertinent to them, all while experiencing the nurturing, creative parts of themselves.
Movement therapy is the practise of using movement to explore emotions, images, and promote psychological and emotional healing through the body, and works to promote support and healing within a session.
Drama and Movement Therapy focuses on working with the healthy parts of an individual; by strengthening and nurturing these healthy parts, this aids the client in experiencing comfort, support and healing. The mediums derived from drama and theatre practices provide invaluable techniques and methods, such as distancing and containment (among others tailored to specific needs), to allow the client to feel supported and safe.
My practise is based on ‘humanistic’ psychotherapy models, which involve experiencing each client as a unique individual, working with the whole person in mind and tailoring the therapy to fit their needs in the present moment, rather than expecting the individual to fit the therapy. It is my belief that great therapeutic value can be acheived by promoting a safe, supportive space to explore more difficult feelings, by facilitating and creating a trusting therapeutic relationship.
I work extensively with how an individual perceives themselves, and find importance in understanding their experiences from their point of view. This ‘person-centred’ approach aids people in feeling accepted, and helps them better understand their own feelings.
By integrating these models with the focus and nurturing of healthy aspects, and the exploration that Drama and Movement Therapy provides, the ultimate aim is to help the client reconnect with their own inner resources through creative mediums. By developing and utilising the client’s inner values, resources and self-worth, this enables the client to trust that they will find the most effective ways for them to grow as a person and move forward in their lives, that works best for them as an individual.
