Drama & Movement Therapy

FAQs

analysis blackboard board bubbleDo I need to be good at Drama to participate in Dramatherapy?

You do not need to be artistic to participate in any form of Arts Psychotherapy. As Dramatherapy focuses on the individual’s process while working with the mediums that drama and theatre provides, instead of preparing or rehearsing for a performance, you do not need to be good at drama to reap the benefits.

What happens once someone has contacted Bristol Dramatherapy?

If a client is happy that they have no more questions or information they would like me to clarify over email, I will invite them to meet me in my therapy space for an initial consultation, where we discuss their initial reasons for seeking therapy, and how the therapy could best suit them. Once we have both decided to work together, the client has the opportunity to leave the space with a copy of the therapy agreement, that will have been discussed and edited (where appropriate) to suit the needs of the therapy; my general policies can be found via this link. Once the client is happy to proceed, the first session can be booked and both parties will sign the therapy agreement and consent form before the first therapy session begins.

Where and when do sessions take place?

In my private practise, individual sessions and small group sessions are held in my private therapy space in The Bromley Building at 73 Quaker’s Road, Downend, Bristol. Our private entrance to building is situated to the back of the building, through a small gated courtyard. For larger groups (over 4 people), I rent a suitable space in the local area. Current availability can be viewed here, however please feel free to contact me if you are yet to find a time that suits you.

How much does therapy cost?

Costs of therapy depend, like everything else, on the needs of the client (as some clients choose to undertake longer sessions). Here is a guideline of my fees for therapy services.

I have different mobility needs, can I still participate Drama and Movement Therapy?

Drama and Movement Therapy is tailored specifically for the client’s needs, i.e psychologically, emotionally and physically. Specific needs can be discussed in our initial meeting before therapy commences, or anytime during the course of the therapy. All activities offered are modified to fit the needs of the client, while still exploring the themes, aims and images it holds to maintain the therapeutic value. As for the location of the therapy, this is dependant on the exact location and the needs of the client, however my therapy space is on the ground floor and has toilet facilities on the same level, with ample accessible parking directly outside the the building. Please let me know if you have any questions or would like me to clarify anything further in relation to this.

What if I have a question not listed here?

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me here and I will reply as soon as I can.

Drama & Movement Therapy

Group Therapy

Group Drama and Movement Therapy Sessions take place with a small number of clients and myself. The initial sessions focus on building trust, with the therapist and group getting to know each other to enable a safe space to be created where clients can feel supported, related to, and to develop understanding and empathy between the members of the group. The group and therapist then journey together to explore difficult feelings and aspects of individuals as they arise, while working creatively and supporting one another through their journey.

Materials and mediums such as stories, images, fabrics, costumes, music, art materials, nature and toy objects are used with the group to work creatively with the feelings and aspects as they arise.

Sessions are usually 90 minutes in duration, once per week, depending on the group’s needs. Small groups of 3-4 members and initial meetings before commencing therapy usually take place in my private therapy space located in Downend, Bristol. For larger groups of 5-6 members, a larger space is rented in the local area. Unlike individual therapy, the group therapy sessions I facilitate usually have an end date set, with a view of how many sessions we will be meeting for, which is agreed upon before commencing therapy sessions. For more information on what groups are currently available, please see below or feel free to contact me directly for more information on upcoming groups.

Current Availability

I apologise but there is no current availability for group sessions, please contact Laura for more information.

Drama & Movement Therapy

Individual Therapy

Following an initial consultation, Individual Drama and Movement Therapy Sessions take place with the client and myself, on a one-to-one basis, where a base of trust, security and support is initially built before beginning to focus creatively on aspects of themselves and their lives that arise during our work together. These sessions take place in my private therapy space located at Quakers Road, Downend, Bristol, BS16 6NH.

Like group therapy sessions, materials and mediums such as stories, images, fabrics, costumes, music, art materials, nature and toy objects are used to work creatively with the feelings and aspects as they arise.

Sessions are usually 50mins-1 hour in duration, once per week, depending on the client’s personal needs. Individual therapy sessions can either be ongoing, or an end-date for therapy can be discussed and set and reviewed if necessary.

Drama & Movement Therapy

About

Dramatherapy is a form of arts psychotherapy which focuses on the practise of using exercises derived from Drama and Theatre, which are rationalised by various different psychological theories. It’s used to support, heal, comfort and provide therapy to an individual person or group of people. In a dramatherapy session, we may draw on mediums such as drama exercises, stories, myths, images, play, mask work, puppetry and voice to help our clients unconsciously explore and examine relationships, perceptions and experiences that are pertinent to them, all while experiencing the nurturing, creative parts of themselves.

Movement therapy is the practise of using movement to explore emotions, images, and promote psychological and emotional healing through the body, and works to promote support and healing within a session.

Drama and Movement Therapy focuses on working with the healthy parts of an individual; by strengthening and nurturing these healthy parts, this aids the client in experiencing comfort, support and healing. The mediums derived from drama and theatre practices provide invaluable techniques and methods, such as distancing and containment (among others tailored to specific needs), to allow the client to feel supported and safe.

Practise

My practise is based on ‘humanistic’ psychotherapy models, which involve experiencing each client as a unique individual, working with the whole person in mind and tailoring the therapy to fit their needs in the present moment, rather than expecting the individual to fit the therapy. It is my belief that great therapeutic value can be achieved by promoting a safe, supportive space to explore more difficult feelings, by facilitating and creating a trusting therapeutic relationship.

I work extensively with how an individual perceives themselves, and find importance in understanding their experiences from their point of view. This ‘person-centred’ approach aids people in feeling accepted, and helps them better understand their own feelings.

By integrating these models with the focus and nurturing of healthy aspects, and the exploration that Drama and Movement Therapy provides, the ultimate aim is to help the client reconnect with their own inner resources through creative mediums. By developing and utilising the client’s inner values, resources and self-worth, this enables the client to trust that they will find the most effective ways for them to grow as a person and move forward in their lives, that works best for them as an individual.
